Turon Recipe (Filipino Banana Lumpia)

I have a simple and delicious turon recipe for you to try! Turon is a sweet Filipino dessert filled with caramelized brown sugar and banana wrapped in a crispy egg roll wrapper. Many of you may have heard the term banana lumpia used in America, but the word lumpia refers to savory eggs rolls with a meat and veggie filling. Despite the differences in definitions, people in America use the word turon and banana lumpia interchangeably.

Traditionally, a turon recipe includes both jackfruit and banana, but my recipe will not include jackfruit. Feel free to include it into the recipe. I used saba bananas to make my turon recipe. At my local Asian grocery store, they were labeled cooking bananas. Cooking bananas are short and wider than your regular bananas. Imagine a stubby baby banana.

Make sure to pick very ripe cooking bananas because the turon will not have a sweet taste. The outside of the banana needs to be a dark brownish/black color. If your Saba banana if still yellow, wait a couple more days for them to turn darker. The inside of the banana is still good even if the banana peel looks like it’s going bad. Similar to cooking banana bread, you want to select very ripe bananas with plenty of dark brown spots. The same goes for choosing Saba bananas for a turon recipe.

My turon recipe makes 8 banana lumpias. If you have more bananas, then make more! Each Saba banana makes two egg rolls since you will be slicing a banana in half.

Next wrap the banana in the egg roll wrapper. Start by placing a banana slice at one corner. Fold the corner over the banana and fold the corners on the left and right side. It should look like an envelope. Then roll the wrapper over. Use water to seal the edge of the wrapper.

Next, add vegetable oil to a pan. Make sure to add enough oil to the pan so that it will cover the banana lumpia. Wait until the oil has heated. Use a wooden chopstick to test when the oil has reached the correct temperature. If oil bubbles around the chopstick, then the oil is ready.
