Oahu Cheap Eats:

1) Zippys

oahu cheap eats zippys korean fried chicken 1024x768 - Oahu Cheap Eats: Top 10 Picks

There are numerous Zippys restaurant locations on Oahu. You have the option to dine in or order take out. Zippys offers an array of food that reflects the cultural diversity and melting pot of Hawaii. They serve Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Hawaiian, Chinese and Portuguese foods with a local twist. I recommend ordering the Korean Fried Chicken, Chili Loco Moco and Chili Spaghetti. Their Chili is so yummy, I love to buy it to make homemade tacos and burritos.

A wonderful thing about Zippys is that every location has a bakery. So If you have room for dessert, try a slice of Chantilly Cake. Chantilly Cake is a local and unique Hawaii delicacy, and it is different from the German Chantilly Cake without the coconut frosting.

2) Marukame Udon

Marukame is located in Waikiki and Downtown Honolulu It is hands down my favorite Oahu Cheap Eats pick! If you’re staying in Waikiki, you can probably walk to the restaurant. It’s one of the cheapest restaurants in Waikiki. This place gets crowded during lunch and dinner so make sure to get there before the rush. Even if there is a long line, the wait isn’t bad. Marukame serves Japanese Udon and Tempura. What is great about this place is the low and cheap prices of their food. All the food is under $10.00. I personally don’t like udon, but after eating here, this place is an exception. The udon noodles are soft and delicious. Honestly, one of the best udon places on Oahu. My favorite dish from Marukame is the Curry Udon.  If you click on the menu link below, the locations of the restaurant are listed on the right sidebar of the page.

3) Wagaya Ramen

Wagaya is a local ramen restaurant in Honolulu that specializes in Tonkotsu Ramen, which is a pork broth. Their broth is prepared using chicken and pork bones, which is simmered for two days. No wonder their broth is so rich and flavorful! And the noodles are very soft. They also use locally sourced and organic ingredients when possible. They offer different selections of Tonkotsu Ramen. I also recommend the Hiyashi Tan Tan Men, which is a cold and soupless version of the Tonkotsu Tan Tan Men. On top of their delicious ramen, the atmosphere of the restaurant is quaint and cozy. I feel like I’m in Japan!

4) Musubi Cafe Iyasume

One of the cheapest snack and lunch foods you can grab in Oahu is a musubi, which  is composed of rice and spam wrapped in seaweed. And the most popular place to grab a spam musubi is at Musubi Cafe Iyasume. They offer many variations of the spam musubi! There is tamago spam musubi, terriyaki spam musubi, bacon egg musubi, avocado bacon spam musubi, and more. The musubis range from $2.00 to $3.00, which is super cheap! There are so many locations in Honolulu that you will have no trouble finding one!

5) Teddy’s Bigger Burger

oahu teddys bigger burger 1024x768 - Oahu Cheap Eats: Top 10 Picks

Teddy’s is a burger joint with a 50s dinner theme.  They use fresh and high quality beef and each burger is made to order. The Teddy’s Original Bigger Burger comes in 1/3 pound (big), 1/2 pound (bigger) or 1 pound patties (biggest). What’s so special about Teddy’s? Well they have an amazing special sauce , a yellow sauce that’s drizzled inside the burger. The sauce is really special because the ingredients are top secret. I don’t know what’s in it, but it taste like a combination of mustard, bbq sauce and Worcestershire sauce. I guess it doesn’t matter what’s inside it because the special sauce makes the burger super yummy! Anyway, if you decide to get a combo, I recommend getting the Original Big Burger with the garlic seasoned fries. My must try items include the chicken sandwich, veggie burger, salmon burger or lettuce wrap!

6) Leonard’s Malasadas

Leonard’s Malasadas is known as the Home of Malasadas and famous for making the Malasada popular in Hawaii. Malasadas are donuts without a hole! Their main store is located in Honolulu, but they also have a mobile truck located in Waikele Shopping Center. Malasadas are Portuguese Donuts sprinkled with sugar. They are so soft and fluffy!!!! They also have Malasadas with fillings. The fillings include custard, coconut (Haupia) and chocolate. I prefer the original Malasadas with just the sugar and no filling.

7) Koa Pancake House

koa pancake house breakfast burrito 2 1024x768 - Oahu Cheap Eats: Top 10 Picks

Koa Pancake House has various locations on the island and serves breakfast and lunch. If you want to have a local breakfast, order either a Spam, Portuguese Sausage or Corn Beef Hash Breakfast Plate, which is served with eggs and your choice of rice, fried rice, toast or potatoes. Any item you order on the menu is delicious. My usual is the breakfast burrito or the Eggs Benedict. Also, the French Toast is amazing because it uses sweet bread, which was introduced to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants during the 19th century. Sweet bread contains sugar and honey, making it special and sweet. Thanks to the Portuguese, bakeries and restaurants make sweet bread in different forms: rolls, hamburger buns, and sliced bread.

8) Kuru Kuru

Kuru Kuru Sushi serves different kinds of sushi! There are several small plates of sushi: crab mayo, seared spicy ebi, dragon rolls, salmon, unagi, etc. Each plate has a different color, which indicates the price of the plate. There are 2 ways to order. You can order from the menu or pick off an item from their revolving sushi line! I just think it’s so cool that they have a revolving sushi line. You will be amazed by it too! It’s like a train of sushi that is waiting to be eaten! My favorite item on the menu is the Ahi Poke Wonton. The softness of the ahi and the crunchiness of the wonton is a perfect match! Kuru Kuru is great for both lunch and dinner.

This is also a round donut without a hole. Order a dozen because you will be wanting more if you just order one! So make sure you eat these poi donuts on your visit; they are just irresistible. 10) Da Spot

I really enjoy eating at Da Spot because it offers a variety of healthy and affordable food choices. Just because you are on vacation doesn’t mean you can’t eat healthy, and Da Spot gives you that option to eat well while you’re vacationing in Hawaii. The food selection is also quite diverse because it serves a wide array of ethnic cuisines from around the world. Enjoy foods from around the globe including Egyptian, Greek, French, Italian, Indian, Thai, Malaysian, Ethiopian, American, Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Pacific cuisine as well as other fusion dishes.
