Hawaiian Coconut Pudding Recipe (Hawaiian Haupia)

Hawaiian Coconut Pudding Recipe (Hawaiian Haupia)

Hawaiian Coconut Pudding (Haupia) is a Hawaiian dessert almost similar to a gelatin. Think of it like a milky and cloudy jello dessert with a coconut taste! Haupia is most commonly served in luaus and gatherings in Hawaii.

I remember the first time I ate my first bite of Hawaiian Coconut Pudding (haupia); I was eating Hawaiian Food at the Waiahole Poi Factory on the east side of Oahu, and I loved every bite of the Hawaiian Coconut Pudding It reminded me of the Thai coconut agar jelly desserts I use to eat as a kid.  Not to mention I have a strong affinity for coconut flavored anything so of course I enjoyed my first time eating haupia. I mean who doesn’t like coconut flavored desserts unless you are allergic to them, which is unfortunate. Anywho, writing about haupia evokes other memories of eating chocolate haupia cream pie and McDonald’s fried haupia pie.

Haupia is very simple to make. Don’t waste your money on overpriced haupia mix because making it from scratch is cheaper and more satisfying. Place the pot on a stove, and stir the coconut milk and sugar together. Bring the coconut milk to a boil.

As you wait for the coconut milk to boil, stir the cornstarch into the water. Mix it well to get rid of any clumps and make sure the cornstarch does not settle at the bottom of the bowl.

Once the coconut milk has come to a boil, lower the heat and slowly add  the cornstarch to the coconut milk. The cornstarch will thicken the coconut milk into a pudding.
